Chilliwack FC hires Troye Flannery as new technical director

May 9, 2022

With great anticipation, the Chilliwack FC Executive is pleased to announce Troye Flannery has accepted the position of technical director for the club. A 2018 Canada West and U SPORTS Coach of the Year, Flannery comes to Chilliwack from the University of Calgary where he has been Head Coach of the nationally recognized Dinos women’s soccer program since 2013.

Flannery, a Canada Soccer National ‘A’ License certified coach, has over 15 years of leadership experience and a proven track record of success building player pathways at the grassroots and performance levels. In 2021, Flannery was awarded the Alberta Soccer Association Bert Goldberger Technical Award for his work with St. Albert Soccer Association, an award that recognizes individuals who provide technical leadership that enhances the reputation of soccer in the province and inspires others to improve the game of soccer from a regional, provincial, national, or international perspective.

Well-acquainted with the local soccer community, Flannery grew up in the Fraser Valley, attended university, played and coached soccer in the area, and has resided in Chilliwack previously. In 2018, Flannery was named to the Trinity Western University Men’s Soccer Wall of Fame as a Program Builder.

“I am super grateful for the opportunity to return home and particularly excited to get to work with the Chilliwack FC membership in the spirit of collaboration to facilitate a best-in-class soccer experience for everyone,” Flannery says.

Flannery says he is passionate about developing coaches and players while growing an environment that fosters diversity and inclusion where athletes of all levels can thrive, priorities that distinctly align with Chilliwack FC’s 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.

Considered instrumental in bringing two women’s pro-am franchises to Canada based at Calgary Foothills FC and St. Albert Impact FC, Flannery is a three-time United Women’s Soccer (UWS) Coach of the Year for the West Conference and recognized twice nationally. In 2018, Flannery was awarded the Calgary Women’s Soccer Association President’s Award for his contributions to the long-term development of women’s soccer in the city.

“As our club continues to follow our strategic plan and pursue our National Youth Club designation, we are confident in Troye’s ability to lead and inspire our coaches and young athletes, and help us realize our club’s greatest potential,” says Richard Tagle, chairperson of Chilliwack FC.

The new hire isn’t the only change in leadership for the Chilliwack FC organization. Following the approval of bylaw amendments at a special general meeting in March, director-at-large Richard Tagle assumed the role of chairperson of the Executive Committee. Tagle is a well-respected soccer coach and educator in the Chilliwack community. Long-serving chair Andrea Laycock remains closely involved in the club’s activities in her elected role as secretary.

Flannery will join Chilliwack FC amid a busy Spring soccer season, including a new adaptive program for children with diverse abilities and exceptionalities. Registration for summer soccer camps and the Fall recreational program is currently underway.

Chilliwack FC announces search for new technical director

April 4, 2022

Chilliwack FC announced today a significant change to the club’s leadership staff and confirmed a search for a new technical director is underway.

Following a review of the club’s policies, the Chilliwack FC Executive and Technical Director Roger Torres-Jaramillo decided it was in the best interest of all those involved to part ways. An investigation by BC Soccer is still ongoing. The results will have no bearing on this decision.

In the interim, certified Chilliwack FC staff coaches, with support from volunteers and Executive members, will ensure that all programming continues as planned with the new Spring season beginning in April.

“We are fortunate to have some incredibly talented individuals on our staff team who are willing to step-up and help us provide another fun, safe, and inclusive soccer experience this Spring,” says Andrea Laycock, Chilliwack FC chairperson. “Thank you to all our coaches for sharing their passion for the sport and commitment to our young athletes in the club.”

A candidate search for a new technical director for Chilliwack FC is now underway.
